Laura Forbes had never fully been out of her wheelchair before\nparticipating in aerial workshops as part of this year\u2019s Paisley Halloween\nFestival, but next week she will perform 100ft in the air in front of Paisley\u2019s\niconic Abbey alongside her Dirty Feet Dance Company family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nPaisley-based Dirty Feet Dance Company aims to create opportunities for\ndisabled and non-disabled people and carers to enjoy, express and fulfil their\npotential through dance. They have been working with professional performers\nfrom Scotland\u2019s leading aerial dance company All or Nothing, on the \u2018Into the\nDark\u2019 show which is taking place as part of this year\u2019s Paisley Halloween\nFestival on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the\nworkshops the group have been given the opportunity to take to the sky in\nspecial aerial harnesses to allow them to express themselves in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laura Forbes\n(40), joined Dirty Feet Dance Company in 2013 and this is the first time she\nhas tried anything like this. She said: \u201cI\u2019ve never been fully out of the\nwheelchair before, when I get lifted in the harness it\u2019s an amazing feeling,\nit\u2019s freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBefore I\nfirst went up in the air I was scared but after the first time in the harness I\njust loved it. It gives me a total sense of freedom out of my wheelchair. If\nthere\u2019s something I\u2019ve learned from this experience it\u2019s that I won\u2019t let being\nscared stop me from trying something new.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cI\ncan\u2019t wait for us all to perform at next week\u2019s festival. When we all come\ntogether we can do anything and achieve anything – we\u2019re all like family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clare Easdon\n(37) has been a member of the group since 2006. She said: \u201cIt feels amazing\nwhen you\u2019re up in the air. I know I\u2019m a wheelchair user but I don\u2019t feel\ndisabled when I\u2019m up there. Being part of Dirty Feet Dance Company lets me try\nnew experiences \u2013 this is the first time I\u2019ve ever done aerial and I love it. I\nthink it\u2019s amazing what we\u2019re able to do as wheelchair users.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the\nworkshops the performers are able to use either a full body or sitting harness\nattached to a pully rope system to give them the opportunity to see how their\nbodies react in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth Foster,\nCo-director of Dirty Feet Dance Company, said: \u201cIt gives the performers a real\nsense of weightlessness and allows them the chance to explore their range of\nmotion in a new platform and artform which has been a great experience for\neveryone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s within\ntheir power how high to go. They can stay a few feet off the ground or can\nascend all the way up to the ceiling. They are in complete control of their\nmovements in the air.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marie\nWilliamson, aerial instructor and performer at All or Nothing, said: \u201cThe\nsystem we use gives them the opportunity to stretch out and discover their\nmovement for themselves. From my point of view it\u2019s an incredible thing to\nbe part of – what I can see them get from it is fantastic<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is one of a series of workshops taking place as part of the\nPaisley Halloween Festival pairing professional performance companies with\nlocal community groups to give them the opportunity to learn new skills and be\ninvolved in the town\u2019s major events programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\naward-winning Paisley Halloween Festival is widely regarded as one of the best\nevents of its kind in the UK. This year\u2019s event takes on a Dark Circus theme\nand promises to be the biggest yet with internationally acclaimed outdoor\ntheatre specialists, Cirque Bijou, helping to deliver an extended programme of\nperformances to thrill, chill and enthral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition\nto the daring aerial performances visitors will be captivated by the mass\ncostumed parade through Scotland\u2019s largest town featuring giant animated\npuppets, frightening floats and a cast of spooky circus characters. There will\nalso be bizarre street theatrics, a ticketed silent disco and a fantastic array\nof family-friendly activities taking place in locations throughout the town\ncentre over the two-day event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
